Fairphone 2, World’s First Modular Smartphone Launched

Fairphone, the company which launched the first ever ethically sourced smartphone back in the year of 2013, has now launched the new Fairphone 2, which is the world’s first-ever modular smartphone. Fairphone 2 is priced at EUR 529.38 or approximately Rs 38,000. The company will start shipping of the handset in the month of December.

In point of fact, the modular design, that helps users to easily assemble and disband the handset, is the most unique feature of it. And, this modular design of the handset is aimed to make it long lasting, robust and recyclable, According to Chief Technology Officer, Oliver Hebert, of Fairphone.

The Fairphone 2 features a 5-inch full HD LCD TFT display with Corning Gorilla Glass. The device is powered by a quad-core Snapdragon 801 processor clocked at 2.26 GHz aided by 2 GB of RAM. Additionally, it has an internal storage capacity of 32 GB which can be further expanded up to 128 GB via external microSD card.

The Fairphone 2 comes with the Android 5.1 Lollipop nevertheless, the company is collaborating with Jolla to release a customised version of the Sailfish OS for the device. It supports 2G, 3G and 4G LTE. On the camera front, the handset sports an 8-megapixel rear camera with the features like autofocus, LED flash and video recording. It has also a 2-megapixel front camera. Moreover, the smartphone is backed up by a 2420 mAh battery and measures a dimension of 143 x 73 x 11 mm and weighs just 148 grams.

It is interesting to know that several companies had earlier come up with a plan to make a modular smartphone before Fairphone. Even, Google is still working on Project ARA. Because of this delay of Google, the Fairphone 2 has become the world’s first modular smartphone.
